Witnesses told police a man in a white shirt had drawn a knife near the corner of Queen and Mitchell Streets.
Officers responded to a triple-0 call around 3.50pm Monday.
One policeman drew capsicum spray and scoured nearby streets with a second officer.
Police have not located the man.
