Sergeant Dale Simm said the bus missed its stop and was bogged in soil after attempting to perform a u-turn about 9am.
"They've been stuck on the side of the road as they've tried to do the u-turn and the bottom of the bus has been caught on the roadway which has then partially probably blocked a lane and a half of the roadway," he said
"There was no injuries to anyone.
"We've now got the bus out and the roadway is clear.
"They've used a chain and lifted up the bus a bit and then just pulled it out with a front end loader."
Police directed traffic around the bus while an Elmore man worked to move the bus off the road using a front end loader.
Blair Wild, who helped police divert traffic, said the bus was full with school students.
"I don't know where the students were from," he said.
"But another bus came to pick them up and take them to school."
