THE National Red Balloon Day committee has sold more than 24,000 red balloons ahead of the February 28 event.
People across Australia have been purchasing official balloons from the website and will display them on the last day of the fire season to thank firefighters for their efforts.
Organiser Jody Hardiman said the response had been overwhelming and said she had been busy trying to keep up with the orders.
"It is amazing how many people have been getting on the website," she said.
"You should see my kitchen, it's balloon central."
Residents are encouraged to buy a red balloon and tie it to their letter boxes, gates or fences as a symbol of thanks.
Official balloons can be purchased by visiting www.nationalredballoonday.com
Bendigo Mazda has thrown its support behind the campaign, donating 5000 balloons to NRBD organisers and 10,000 to the Bendigo Advertiser to giveaway.
The Bendigo Advertiser will give the first 10,000 people who buy a copy of the paper on February 27 a balloon.
