A Powercor spokesman said since early morning in the northern part of the state there had been wide-spread power pole fires from the rain.
"Currently we've got 4800 customers off supply," he said.
"That's mostly in Bendigo, Charlton and Cohuna.
"There's 2300 in the Bendigo area and we've had about double that in the last 24 hours across the whole system.
"We've got 71 faults to fix so that's why it's taking so long to get these customers back on.
"It takes a lot of work to get these fixed.
"We've had crews throughout the day and we've got some more crews coming on."

SOME Harcourt residents are experiencing power outages.
Sue Cairns from North Harcourt Road told the Bendigo Advertiser at 1.20pm her home had been without power since 6am.
"We've been told it won't be back on again until 7pm," she said.
"Out here if you don't have power, we don't have water.
"It's a long time to be without power."
According to the Powercor website's incidents list there are 41 customers without power in Harcourt North.
The cause is under investigation.
