And he hopes that just like he has gone on to achieve, there are future senior captains among this year's crop of Bloods' juniors.
"I started playing at South when I was nine, and apart from some years with the Bendigo Pioneers and Bombers, have played at the club since," Connaughton said on Thursday.
"Obviously, when you get to the back end of your career like I am, you start to reflect on your foundations of where you started.
"We've got some really good people involved with our juniors, and that's really important for the future of our club.
"Back when we played in the 2010 grand final, we had something like 17 players who had come through the South juniors, which is what it's all about."
South Bendigo will hold its junior registration day this Sunday from 2 to 4pm at the South Bendigo social rooms at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
The registration day covers under nine's through to under-16s. For more information, contact Brent Bogaski on 0448 050 588 and Rob Robertson on 0424 575 658.
