Acting Sergeant Mark Bell said Monday afternoon's incident on the corner of Station Street and Ironstone Road had the potential to have dire consequences.
"It appears one of the drivers failed to give way and luckily both drivers escaped with very minor injuries and were treated on scene," he said.
"Our initial fears were there may have been an explosion.
"The CFA attended and checked the integrity of the bottles and found them to be sound with no gas leaks.
"The two cars suffered extensive damage but it's very lucky there wasn't an explosion or any injuries as a result."
