PREPS at St Mary's Catholic Parish and Winters Flat Primary Schools have settled in well on their first day of school.
St Mary's Catholic Parish Primary School principal Ben Donnelly said their Grade 6 buddy program had been working well.
"The buddies are showing the preps around and introducing them to the rest of the school," he said Thursday.
"It gives the preps somebody to talk to, makes them feel more comfortable and they show them around the school."
St Mary's Catholic Parish Primary School preps were making friends and having fun, despite the heat.
Thirteen preps started at the school this year.
Mr Donnelly said the preps were fitting in with other children.
"The heat has slowed them down a little," he said.
Winters Flat Primary School business manager Karen Mahoney said their preps were also adjusting to their new primary school.
"We have 26 kids this year," she said.
"It's a little bit warm for them at the moment."
Ms Mahoney said all 26 children were settling in well.
The kids of St Mary's Catholic Parish and Winters Flat Primary Schools were among the 75,00 preps starting school for the first time.
A total of 890,600 students are returning to school after their summer break, and 498,200 are primary school students.
