THE handling of Cr Peter Cox's dismissal as chair of the Kangaroo Flat Mine Environmental Review Committee has been poor.
As a respected Bendigo councillor, he deserved much better.
He certainly doesn't deserve the innuendo and speculation this unsubstantiated action has brought to his name.
He certainly doesn't deserve the innuendo and speculation this unsubstantiated action has brought to his name.
If Cr Cox's claim that strong comments made during a City of Greater Bendigo council debate on mining in November was the catalyst for his dismissal, then why didn't those who made the decision simply say that?
Clearly, there was an expectation at high levels that this issue had been resolved given the strong comments from Minister for Energy and Resources Nick Kotsiras on Tuesday demanding his department have a full report into the affair on his desk first thing Wednesday morning.
Given Cr Cox was acting in this position on a voluntary basis and this was a community committee, residents should expect a full explanation of what's actually happened to bring about this drastic course of action.
We await details of the minister's report on Wednesday and some qualifying comment about the dismissal.
