The speed limit around schools is 40 kilometres an hour.
Acting Senior Sergeant Della Nihill said there would be an increase in pedestrian traffic around schools.
She warned motorists to stay alert and watch out for children near roads.
"Drivers need to be patient and aware of an increase in pedestrian traffic and also young people using the road on their bikes," she said.
"It is important that motorist adhere to the speed limit - sometimes they will be required to travel slower than the limit."
Senior Sergeant Nihill said the penalty for driving 10 to 25 kilometres above the school zone speed limit was an $180 fine and one demerit point.
She said motorists would be fined $289 and lose three demerit points if they drove more than 25 kilometres above the speed limit.
Senior Sergeant Nihill said there would be a greater presence of police patrolling schools zones this week.
Schools around central Victoria will resume on either Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
