Rush-hour traffic on High Street was held up for about 20 minutes as police, CFA and tow trucks attended the scene near the corner of Wesley Street.
Leading Senior Constable Mark Herman said a black Holden Commodore was travelling outbound on High Street when the driver veered off course and hit a large power pole.
The power pole sheared off at ground level and fell across the inbound lanes.
“It was extremely fortunate that no one was injured, especially at this time of day,” Leading Senior Constable Herman said.
The front of the car was extensively damaged but the driver was unhurt. He was taken by ambulance to Bendigo Hospital for observation.
Leading Senior Constable Herman said it appeared the man had a medical issue and had either fainted or had a fit.
Witnesses had said they thought the driver, the car’s sole occupant, was unconscious when he veered into the pole.
Senior Constable Herman said there were no live electricity issues with the pole but Powercor staff were on their way to assess the damage.
