Cheri O'Connell said more than 500 families have contacted her at her Mia Mia home offering encouragement and asking for advice.

Ms O'Connell's eight-year-old daughter Tara has used doses of liquid cannabis to treat her epilepsy.

Melbourne Child Neurology doctor Lindsay J. Smith said Tara’s improvement since using the cannabis was “nothing short of miraculous”.

Ms O’Connell said she believed Tara would have been in intensive care if it were not for the cannabis treatment.

She said she was "devastated" to think that other children were suffering because the drugs were not accessible.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that there are kids' lives at stake," she said. 

"These kids are dying. You don't realise how widespread it is. Everyone that has been in touch said they just want help. It's the same story."

She said she was still pushing for a medical trial but was no closer to any definitive answers.

"No-one’s been able to give me any guidance," she said.

"If I knew I could go through step 1,2,3,4 I would do it. I would love to see a referendum on it. Let the people vote."
