LET'S hope the Victorian government follows the lead of NSW in regards to increasing sentencing for 'coward punches'.
NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has announced new measures, including a minimum eight-year sentence, for fatal 'one-punch' assaults influenced by drugs or alcohol.
The 'coward punch' debate has been thrust back into the media spotlight by the death of Daniel Christie - king-hit in Sydney's King's Cross on New Year's Eve.
Mr O'Farrell's angry response at the rise in attacks are wise words indeed.
Clearly society is failing to learn its lesson in regards to alcohol and drug-fuelled violence.
These incidents of people being assaulted in a drunken rage are far too frequent.
It's important the strengthening of laws is accompanied by a strong education campaign which makes all in society well aware of the repercussions for such behaviour.
The death of Daniel Christie and far too many like him is senseless and unacceptable.
Many hundreds more such as Bendigo's Matt Scarff suffer severe and debilitating injuries in these 'one-punch' assaults.
It's well and truly time for society to stand up to these cowards.
Clearly society is failing to learn its lesson in regards to alcohol and drug-fuelled violence.
