The incident comes just one week after 40 Coliban Water customers in Castlemaine were without water for more than two hours after a main burst in Barker Street.
Constable Dave Becker from Castlemaine Police said Tuesday night's burst about 100 metres from last Tuesday's burst.
"I can't tell you a lot about it but I believe it was very similar to the last one," he said.
"We had a similar incident about a week ago in Barker Street - a burst pipe and they dug a big hole in the road and fixed it up.
"This one was very similar.
"I'm led to believe there might have been two or three spots that might have burst.
"I'm tipping that once the pipes have all gone under full pressure again it's caused it to burst somewhere else."
A burst water main was also recently reported in Bendigo at the intersection of Napier Street and Weeroona Avenue.
A Coliban Water spokesperson confirmed a 225mm AC water main burst in Barker Street, Castlemaine on Tuesday.
About 30 properties were impacted with the supply restored to customers by 10.30pm.
"The water main was originally laid in 1953 and has come to the end of its useful life," a media statement said.
"Sections of this water main are scheduled for replacement in our 2014/15 water main renewal program.
"We believe the recent failures are due to the age of the water main.
"We will be closely monitoring the water main to determine if these works will need to be re-prioritised."
Meanwhile, minor changes to the operation of the network in the area are being considered.
The media statement said bursts were part of operating and water business and would occur across the region from time to time.
"Following the recent heatwave in our region we did not experience any burst activity that was outside our expectations," the statement said.
"When bursts do occur it is largely due to the age of the water main, ground conditions or external factors such as traffic movement."
