Police call for care on the water

WATER Police are calling on all Victorians to stay safe while on the water this Australia Day long weekend.

The call comes after recent incidents at Shallow Point on the Bass Coast, Frankston and Kilcunda.

Police say in at least two of those incidents people were not wearing a personal flotation device.

Acting Senior Sergeant Alistair Nisbet said everyone could play their part to avoid being stuck in a dangerous situation on the water.

“We have some of the best beaches, lakes and rivers in the world and while we want everyone to enjoy them, we don’t want lives put at risk," he said.

“By making sure you have the right safety equipment, using up to date and well maintained equipment, and following a number of other steps, we can all enjoy summer on the water safely.”

Water Police will be conducting a series of summer operations targeting the key contributing factors to water related injuries and fatalities.

“Police will be out patrolling and enforcing on our waterways but equally important is that people actively ensure their own safety.”
