Firefighters arrived at the Kangaroo Flat shopping centre about 9.30am and used a thermal imaging camera to check the SportFirst shop.
There was no fire and the cause of the electrical smell was not identified.
Security guard Leigh Guiney said the centre had not been evacuated and there was no disruption to shoppers.
"Some staff and customers smelt smoke coming from the store this morning," he said.
"The CFA was called so they could thoroughly check it out."
Firefighters packed up their equipment about 10.30am after advising the shopping centre management to get an electrician to further check for any faults within the store.
