Mr Brittain said a number of the fires in central Victoria were the result of lightning strikes.
"We have had a number of fires started by lightning which has put a strain on fire crews," he said.
"Some of the lightning has been dry while some has come with a bit of precipitation which has helped the firefighters."
Today has been declared a day of Total Fire Ban for the whole of Victoria.
The CFA reminds people it is illegal to light a fire in the open air today.
