The town is sweltering through the heatwave after the mercury hit 46.5 degrees on Tuesday - the highest temperature in the state.
Charlton Post Office staff member Janet Scarlett said it was hard to avoid the topic of the weather this week.
"Virtually every customer made a comment about the heat," she said.
"It was extremely hot and very uncomfortable.
"At work we have two air-conditioners but it is much harder when you go home.
"The steering wheel of the car is hot and it takes a while for the cooler to work."
Ms Scarlett said she felt sorry for the staff at the tyre centre and those who worked outside.
The Boyz Cafe owner Neville Cloak said he closed the shop early on Tuesday.
"There was no-one around, so we went home," he said.
"I can't wait for next week - bring it on baby, bring it on."
