The well-known Catholic priest, who was awarded the Order of Australia in 1989, will be a guest speaker and Australia Day Ambassador at the celebrations.
Mount Alexander Shire mayor Michael Redden will also be presenting Australia Day awards and conducting a citizenship ceremony as part of the event at Victory Park, on Sunday January 26.
The event, which takes place from 10.30am until 1.30pm, will include live music, dancing, an animal farm and a free barbecue by the Castlemaine Lions Club.
Celebrations will also be held in the Maldon Gardens from 8am. In Harcourt there will be a free breakfast in Stanley Park from 7.30am and there will be a flag raising at Dunstan’s Flat in Faraday.
There will also be free entry to the YMCA swimming pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt and Maldon.
