UPDATE, 6PM SATURDAY: A witness has told police that three cars were travelling erratically side-by-side when a fatal crash occurred near Wedderburn.

Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Clanchy from the Major Collision Investigation Unit urged more witnesses to the crash to come forward.

“We need to get to the bottom of what happened,” he said.

“This is something that shouldn’t happen. Two people have lost their lives through driving that is just unacceptable.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Clanchy said it appeared two of the vehicles had collided and ran off the Calder Highway into trees on Saturday afternoon.

A 51-year-old Wedderburn man who was travelling in the third car is at Bendigo Police Station assisting police.

A 35-year-old woman was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and a 67-year-old man is at Bendigo Hospital.

The two deceased people were adult males, believed to be from the local area.
