Primitive Man, trained by Shane Fliedner, ran third behind the smart Kaiser Sun over 1000m, while the Rod Symons-trained I'm An Outoftowner finished a close-up fourth behind Spirits Dance in the opening event of the day.
Primitive Man looked set to finish midfield at best at the 300m mark, but his final 200m was strong, surging home to run third.
He will be much better suited when he gets out to 1400m.
I'm An Outoftowner settled back in the field in the 1200m race before jockey Chris Symons weaved a passage through the field in the final furlong.
On that run the filly should be breaking her maiden status sooner rather than later.
