BENDIGO Police have charged a 22-year-old man with assault with intent to rape after an incident in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The man has also been charged with indecent assault and unlawful assault.
Detective Sergeant Noel Jacobs said the alleged incident occurred at about 3.10am when a woman in her 40s was walking home.
"A female was walking along the laneway along Barnard Street between the pool and croquet club," he said.
"It's alleged a male has approached her and grabbed her by the hair.
"A witness has driven past and assisted her, which is certainly good of her.
"It's then alleged the male has taken off on foot towards town.
"The male was arrested a short time later in Rosalind park where he was taken back to the police station and interviewed in relation to assault, indecent assault and other offences.
"He's been bailed to appear in court on February 5."
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old male from Rochester is recovering in hospital after he was allegedly glassed at a camp site at Greens Lake.
The teenager is in a stable condition at Bendigo Health.
Echuca police have charged a 17-year-old Kyabram man with assault, who has been released on bail.
The man is expected to face the Echuca Children's Court at a later date.
Detective Senior Constable Bernadette Wadding said the alleged victim had sustained injuries.
"The victim is at Bendigo Health is a stable condition," she said.
"They're not life threatening but they are serious facial injuries.
Detective Senior Constable Wadding said the alleged incident occurred at a camp site about 11pm on New Year's Eve.
"There was some sort of an altercation prior to this one but I don't know if they were known to each other before that," she said.
