Police say a 21-year-old woman was walking near the old Bendigo Gaol about 3.40am on Wednesday when she was assaulted with the attempt to rape.

16,000 revellers rock at the Falls Festival

About 16,000 revellers ushered in the New Year at the Falls Festival in Lorne, in what was the biggest party outside Melbourne's CBD.

Festival director Jessica Ducrou said perfect weather contributed to an awesome vibe, as the coastal town of about 1500 residents welcomed its annual influx of visitors.

Medicare about to cover dental care for 3.4m children

More than 3 million children will be eligible for Medicare-funded dental care under a scheme starting on Wednesday.

The $2.7 billion scheme is the final element of a dental package negotiated by the Greens with Julia Gillard in return for their support for her minority government.
