UPDATE 7PM: A four-year-old girl was killed and her mother seriously injured after a large tree limb weighing up to four tonnes fell on them in Bendigo's Rosalind Park.
Bendigo Police Sergeant Damian Keegan said the child and her mother were walking together when the accident happened.
"At approximately 5.15pm this afternoon, a mother and child were walking through the park and unfortunately a branch has fallen from one of the trees and as a result the child is deceased and the mother has been taken to hospital with serious injuries," Sergeant Keegan said.
Sergeant Keegan said he believed the mother had been taken to Bendigo Hospital with possible spinal injuries.
Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Gabrielle Degenhardt said the woman in her 30s had a fractured leg, a head injury and a possible spinal injury.
Sergeant Keegan said it was too soon to tell whether recent high winds and temperatures had led to the tragedy.
"It’s early at the moment, we’re still going through doing our inquiries as to what’s caused this unfortunate tragedy," Sergeant Keegan said.
“Inquiries will be made by the relevant parties to ascertain the condition of the tree.”
He said detectives were on scene assisting with the investigation and that the City of Greater Bendigo had been notified.
City of Greater Bendigo city futures director Stan Liacos said the child's death was "an absolute tragedy''.
"We at the city and I’m sure everyone in the greater Bendigo community have been shattered and saddened by this news,'' he said.
"Our deep and sincere heartfelt condolences are extended to the family at this time.
"We will liaise with emergency services to try to understand what happened to cause this tragedy.
"We will do a thorough inspection of the park and respond as needed
"At the moment, our highest priority is to extend care and thoughts to the family.''
Sergeant Keegan said the incident appeared to be "one of those unfortunate things... families are in the park enjoying a nice day and unfortunately… a young child has passed away.
“It’s unfortunate probably at any time of year but I suppose during the holiday season it hits home more.”
He said people camping and walking in the bush should make sure they were aware of their surroundings.
"Given this time of year and given our severe weather we’re having, the heat and the winds, if you do go camping it’s likely to happen along the rivers, and people should make sure they’re aware of their surrounds when they’re walking through bushland,” he said.
