David, Judy and their two children Rebecca and Georgie volunteered at the community lunch.
It was the first time the family had helped at the event and did it as a way to give back to the community.
"We always have a good Christmas so it was a chance to get out there and give back," David said.
"It is a nice event and Christmas is about family, so why not do something with the family."
Rebecca said her family had always talked about volunteering at the lunch but it wasn't until this year they decided to put their hands up.
"Hopefully it is something we continue to do," she said.
Another family helping at the lunch was Canberra's Bert and Maggie Kuijpers.
The pair are travelling around Australia and decided to stop in Bendigo for Christmas.
"We are having Christmas in Bendigo so we thought we'd do some volunteer work while we are here," Mr Kuijpers said.
"We are really enjoying it."
