This code should be about giving businesses licence to get creative with the appearance and settings of their dining establishments.
A code must exist. There must be control to ensure limits.
But it's heartening to see council not only talk with small business but listen to their argument.
Businesses must be given incentive to improve their image and the experience they can offer customers.
The picket fence and the awning put in place by Masons of Bendigo was a major improvement for the image of Queen Street.
The image presented by Masons with these improvements would have looked right at home on any Melbourne restaurant strip.

Bendigo should be welcoming such a proactive approach with open arms, not wrapping such initiative in red tape.
Council's decision is an opportunity for dining establishments and other street trading establishments in Bendigo to consider their image and what they offer.
