Senior Constable Stephen Thomas said the iPad was stolen from Howell Crescent between 8.30am and 10am.
"A lady left it on the bonnet of her car, (which) was parked outside her house," Senior Constable Thomas said.
"They had visitors come over - they had family visit for Christmas.
"So they've gone out there, used the iPad, taken a couple of photos and then they've put it down on the bonnet of their car and said their goodbyes."
Senior Constable Thomas said the woman realised she'd left the iPad outside about an hour later.
"After the family's gone, they've gone back inside the house and then about an hour later realised they'd left this thing outside on their car," Senior Constable Thomas said.
"They've run back outside to grab it and realised it's gone.
"Obviously there are photos of sentimental value on the iPad.
"It's an apple iPad mini.
"It's got to be someone in the area who's grabbed this thing.
"So we're just an appeal that it be returned."
Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
