The Bendigo Pioneers graduate was touted as a potential AFL draftee, but after missing selection has decided to play in the VFL with the Gold.
The Strathfieldsaye teenager played two games with the Gold in 2013, impressing with his ball-winning ability.
"Sam Heavyside's story is exactly what the Bendigo Gold is all about,'' Gold coach Aussie Jones said.
"A really good Bendigo Pioneers player who didn't have a lot of luck with injuries and had a couple of setbacks.
"I don't think there's any doubt that he has the ability to be on an AFL list. We're a good vehicle for him to show his talent.
"We are excited Sam has joined us after interests from every VFL club.
"It was a huge vote of confidence in our club that Bendigo's best young player chose us to play his VFL footy with.
"Sam will play a midfield role and we'll give him very opportunity to put his name up in front of AFL recruiters."
Heavyside's Pioneers' team-mate Jordan Hargreaves has also signed with the Gold.
"Jordan has a good as an attitude towards his footy as anyone I have coached, and will play key position/ruck for us,'' Jones said.
"He was so excited when we offered him a contract. That's what we want. We want people who want to be involved with the club and are genuinely excited about the opportunity we provide.
"Jordan and Sam fit the mould perfectly for the Gold."
