Earlier:
Police are searching an area near Inglewood for the body of a man who may have been killed after a dispute with his former partner.
Wayne Amey is believed to have been killed on December 10.
Mr Amey, 54, was last seen leaving Romeo’s restaurant on Toorak Road in Toorak around 11.10pm last Tuesday.
The alarm was raised by Mr Amey’s son the following morning when he went to his father’s apartment in Hawthorn and noticed his car missing and a pool of blood in the car park.
Mr Amey’s vehicle was located on Friday in the Brunswick area.
Two people, a 40-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man, have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with enquiries.
Homicide squad Detective Inspector John Potter said police were searching for another man, John Anthony Ryan, who may have been involved in the murder.
Detective Inspector Potter said Mr Amey had been separated from his former partner for several years, and there had been ongoing animosity between the couple.
Mr Amey, Mr Ryan, and the two people in custody are all known to police and knew each other.
Mr Amey’s red Hilux ute was stolen on the night he was killed but was found on Friday afternoon in Brunswick, when the man and woman were arrested.
Mr Potter said it was possible Amey was killed at his house or kidnapped before being murdered at another location.
A weapon may have been used.
Police started searching Crown land near Mount Korong on Monday, but have found no trace of Mr Amey.
Detective Inspector Potter said it was unclear if the woman, 40, was the mother of Mr Amey’s son.
He said he did know if the woman was involved in a relationship with the 54-year-old who has been arrested, or with Mr Ryan.
Mr Ryan, 36, is believed to be in the Coburg area.
Police have checked his address and the addresses of known associates, and found his yellow Honda motorcycle in Coburg on Monday.
A warrant has been issued for Mr Ryan’s arrest and the public were warned not to approach him.
Detective Inspector Potter said the motive for the murder was unclear, but could not rule out that drugs were a factor.
‘‘There’s a dispute there, we’re working on a theory, but it is only a theory at this stage,’’ he said.
Anyone with information about Mr Amey’s murder or My Ryan’s whereabouts is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
