Arnold resident Keith Graham did not know the name of the 61-year-old.
"He lived on a remote paddock on the fringes of Arnold," he said.
"I believe he worked as a cleaner in Bendigo, cleaning offices at night.
"None of the locals (in Arnold) knew him very well.
"I don't know his background, just that he worked a lot."
Bendigo Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Peter Dyer said the man's ute collided with a tree on the Wimmera Highway at Wilsons Hill about 2.30am after the white Ford veered from the road.
"We believe the male driver was on his way home when he crashed," he said.
Police said fatigue caused the crash.
