The City of Greater Bendigo funded the upgrade as part of a 2013/14 Budget commitment.
Mayor Barry Lyons will meet with hammer throw athletes on Wednesday.
Manager Active and Healthy Communities Patrick Jess said the upgrade included re-configuring the cage’s steelworks and replacing the netting.
“To make the cage safer for competitors, officials and track athletes, the gates were widened to ensure the hammer can better land within its allocated field,” Mr Jess said.
“After 14 years, the netting was also past its used-by date and was replaced, further improving the cage’s safety."
The upgrade was completed on time and came in under budget.
The project cost $43,671.
