BENDIGO Police say if you are caught using your mobile phone you will be penalised.
Acting Sergeant Kevin Hume-Cook said a phone must be in a cradle if you are using it in the car.
He said if the phone were to ring in the car the driver must be able to answer the phone without touching it.
“Even if you are at the traffic lights you cannot touch the phone, not even to pick it up and check the time,” Sergeant Hume-Cook said.
Tough new penalties for drivers were announced on Monday.
Penalties will increase from a $289 fine and three demerit points to a fine of $433 and four demerit points.
Senior sergeant Paul Gardiner said under the new penalties green p-plate drivers would also be not allowed to use their phones while driving.
“Currently P1 drivers are not allowed to use their phones full stop,” he said.
“That will be extended to green p-plate drivers.
“They cannot use their phones not even hands-free.”
Penalties for all motorists will come into effect on November 25.
