A NEW garden supplies company is one of three new businesses set to open in close proximity at Epsom.
Good Earth Garden Supplies will expand from Maiden Gully onto a 1.5 acre site at 92 Midland Highway at a cost of more than $1 million.
The former Bendigo Windsor Caravan and RVs property has also been sold to a car rental firm, and a block at 88 Midland Highway has been sold to a developer.
Jason Wheelhouse, who runs Good Earth with his brother Wes, said Epsom was well-placed for expansion.
“We just felt there was an opportunity to expand out there and grow our customer base,” he said.
“With Epsom going the way it is, it’s an ideal opportunity to grow on that.
“It will be built on the same model as our business in Maiden Gully but it’s a lot bigger.”
Mr Wheelhouse said he hoped to have the business operational by Christmas and was working through the planning process with the City of Greater Bendigo, which was almost finished.
“We’re just trying to finalise a few things they’re requesting.
“The residential side of things are booming at Maiden Gully and likewise at Epsom.
“We’re very confident it’s going to work.
“Things are going ahead in building and housing and everyone seems really confident.”
The Maiden Gully branch employs six people with the Epsom business to employ a similar number of staff.
“It’s going to be a seven day a week business,” Mr Wheelhouse said.
“That’s what customers are looking for at the moment.”
The company will have to invest new trucks and equipment and hire new staff.
Robert Ketterer of DCK real estate said Epsom’s population growth would drive demand for new services.
“There’s a lot of scope for development,” he said.
“People are starting to realise that the Epsom area is growing and expanding, particularly now that you’ve got developments as far as Huntly with Viewpoint and a number in the Epsom area.
“I just think that it’s positive news for Bendigo.”
