THE Bendigo Cup received a special prayer on Sunday.
Monisgnor Frank Marriott blessed the cup during a racing mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Bendigo Jockey Club chairman Brendan Drechsler said this was only the second time the cup had been blessed and he hoped the tradition would continue for years to come.
"This is an exciting period of the year for thoroughbred racing and the Jayco Bendigo Cup is now a highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival," he said.
"We bless the cup to ensure the day of racing is safe and all participants enjoy a great day at the Jayco Bendigo Cup."
Racegoers are gearing up for the Bendigo Cup, with more than 10,000 people likely to flock to the Bendigo Jockey Club on Wednesday.
The weather is expected to be sunny, with a top of 21 degrees.
Mr Drechsler described the iconic event as Country Racing's "social sporting day of the year".
"The Bendigo Jockey Club horse racing activities bring an enormous economic and community benefit to Bendigo," he said.
"And let's not forget the very important social outlet it provides where we can gather and meet, celebrate and mix together, which is what a community is all about."
The Marong Cup, which takes place in February, was also blessed at the mass.
