MARYBOROUGH is rejoicing after one of the town’s champion sports stars got drafted to play in the greatest basketball league in the world.
Matthew Dellavedova is an official Cleveland Cavaliers player after making the NBA eastern conference club’s final roster of 15 on Saturday morning.
His proud parents Mark and Leanne Dellavedova told the Bendigo Advertiser of their relief after their son’s dream came true.
“He called us in the early hours of the morning, about 4am,” Mark said.
“He was very happy and so were we.”
Mark said since finishing college with St Mary’s in March, Matthew has had to work hard to get to where he is today.
“It has been a long road,” he said.
"He has had to work extremely hard.
“He has had to overcome several barriers but we are all really excited for him.”
Leanne said she was so proud of her son and what he has been able to achieve.
“It has always been his dream,” she said.
"With basketball he has always given 110 per cent."
Mark said his son has always had the determination to make it to the NBA.
“He has always had a very strong belief in himself,” he said.
“He always knew deep down that he was good enough.
"It is great to finally see the Cavaliers have that same belief in him."
Since finding out the big news the Dellavedova family have been receiving well wishes from across Australia.
“He has received fantastic support from everyone,” Leanne said.
“Family, friends all of his teams that he has played for, the AIS and St Mary’s have all sent messages.
“They have all been on the edge of their seats waiting to find out as well.”
Leanne said his wife and two daughter Yana and Ingrid were now planning to book flights to see their son in America later this year.
“We will be going in mid-December to the east coast,” she said.
“We will be meeting his new family.”
