THE Bendigo Art Gallery is set to host some of the finest examples of British art next year.
In another coup for the Bendigo Art Gallery, Ambition and Genius from The Royal Academy of Arts in London will tour Australia for the first time.
About 100 works will be featured in the exhibition including valued works by Thomas Gainsborough, John Singer Sargent, Henry Fuseli and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
The exhibition is the first from the Royal Academy in its 245-year history to be collectively showcased in Australia.
"This extraordinary collaboration between Bendigo Art Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts will provide audiences with an unprecedented opportunity to view works that tell the story of the institution’s influential role since 1768," Bendigo Art Gallery director Karen Quinlan said.
"We are thrilled and are very much looking forward to hosting this extraordinary collection of works."
To complement the works on loan from the London gallery, 30 significant works by Australian artists will also be exhibited.
The exhibition will be in Bendigo between March 2 and June 9, 2014.
