A PIECE of gold rush history is up for sale.
The Old England Hotel in Barkers Creek has been put on the market by Rhonda Martinez and her partner of 25 years Richard Wilksch.
The charming two bedroom property, built in the 1850s, was de-licensed in 1925 but still retains the original bar and ladies lounge.
And according to Rhonda, you can’t help but love it.
“It is the sort of building that envelops you,” she said.
“To own a piece of history is just amazing.
“It started as a single cottage and then they struck gold across the road.
Historic old pub goes on the market
It is like stepping back in time to an old cowboy saloon. It’s amazing
“There was a mad rush and the chap who owned the cottage decided not to go digging for gold but to build a bar. He cashed in on all the drunk miners. Then he opened a general store next door. He was very entrepreneurial. He probably made quite a bit and I’m sure there was gold dropped everywhere.
“We have kept it virtually the way it was and we hope whoever buys it will continue with that.
“It is like stepping back in time to an old cowboy saloon. It’s amazing.
“We got it when it was a bit neglected, but the people before us did an amazing job. If not for them it wouldn't still be standing but they got older and it was hard for them to keep up and it got a little neglected so we stepped in.
“We poured a lot of love into it and brought it back to life.
“The more you pour into it the more it responds.
“We live in it and run a B&B next door that is also up for sale.
“Someone could step in and do what we did or they could live in the B&B and rent out the pub.
"Every week people stop to take pictures and ask to come inside.
“It is full of history. I am a bit sad to see it go, we have put so much work into it, but I’m looking forward to having a little more land and we are moving from one and a half acres up to 15 acres.”
Cantwell Property Castlemaine agent Danielle Johnson said the property would appeal to lovers of history, entertainment and 'whimsy'.
