CAKE judging is not something taken lightly at the Bendigo Agricultural Show.
On Thursday morning, six CWA members inspected dozens of cakes, ranging from sponge to scones to chocolate to the popular fruit cake.
And throughout the 154 years of the competition, judges have taken the responsibility seriously.
Judge Betty Mustey has sat several CWA cake judging exams and tests, to gain the knowledge needed to pick a winning entry.
She still submits revision papers in order to volunteer as a qualified judge.
"You definitely get to taste some amazing cakes but there's also a lot to know about it too," Ms Mustey said.
"We're looking for a well cooked cake with good texture, rise, well distributed fruit if applicable, and most importantly taste."
Fellow volunteer Lois Pickles said there had been lots of junior cake entries this year, which was great to see.
"We want to promote that old-fashioned baking and hope they'll come on so when we can't cook anymore, they can take over," she said.
