COUNCILLOR Barry Lyons has been selected as Bendigo's new mayor elect.
City of Greater Bendigo councillors last night voted at a special council meeting, and chose Cr Barry Lyons for the top job.
He will take over from mayor Lisa Ruffell on November 4.
Cr Lyons unsuccessfully ran for mayor 12 months ago and made his bid for the position based on his experience as a councillor.
“I’m a firm hard, engaging and I play an active role," he said prior to being elected.
“I think I consider things before I make decision and I never get upset if it doesn’t go my way."
Cr Lyons said councillor Lisa Ruffell had performed well in the role, which she will hold until November 4.
Cr Ruffell said she had enjoyed working as mayor and said her open door policy had been the best achievement of her time in the position.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the role and I’ve enjoyed the support the chief executive and the directors,” she said.
“It’s been great.”
Cr Ruffell said she would consider running for the position again in coming years.
"Also the independent review was a great thing to deliver to the community," she said.
"If I had the time to spare, it's something I'd definitely like to have the opportunity to do again."
It is expected that Cr James Williams will soon be elected as Bendigo's first deputy mayor.
