BENDIGO is likely to have a new mayor-elect tonight.
City of Greater Bendigo councillors will discuss the position after Wednesday night's council meeting and are likely to choose the new mayor and deputy mayor.
Councillor Peter Cox and Barry Lyons are both running for the top job and both say it’s too close to call.
“I’m fairly confident,” Cr Cox said.
“I’m standing to give people a choice.
“By standing as mayor, I’m giving them a choice of who they want as their leader.”
Cr Lyons, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor 12 months ago, said his experience made him well-qualified for the role.
“I’m a 50-50 chance,” he said.
“Myself and Peter Cox are the only ones that have showed our hands.
“I’m a firm hard, engaging and I play an active role.
“If I get elected I’ll have a fair bit more to say.”
Cr Lyons said councillor Lisa Ruffell had performed well in the role, which she will hold until November 4.
And Cr Ruffell said she had enjoyed working as mayor.
“There are two fellow councillors who have put their name up,” she said.
“There’s no need for me to run again.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the role and I’ve enjoyed the support the chief executive and the directors.
“It’s been great.”
Cr Ruffell said she would consider running for the position again in coming years.
