McKern Steel lends a hand
EIGHT organisations have shared $20,000 in donations by the McKern Steel Foundation.
The recipients, which included Bendigo Spirit, Star Cinema and Kids Under Cover, were presented the money on Tuesday night.
McKern Steel director Michael McKern said the groups all deserved the support.
“Four years ago we set up our own company foundation to give money to the charitable groups, sporting groups and community groups,” he explained.
“It’s for groups and people in need who can’t gain funding.
“We do this twice a year and the presentation night is a chance to hear from some of the groups about what they’ve been up to.”
The groups received donations ranging from $7,000 to $500.
Bendigo Health Foundation director Jane Anderson said the money donated to her organisation would be used for the annual Bendigo Health Fun Run.
More than 2,200 people have already signed up for the November 3 event.
“We’re very excited,” she said.
“We’re very appreciative of the McKern Steel Foundation.
“The money’s really important.
“All our expenses are paid by organisations like the foundation and if we didn’t have that support, we’d have to be taking the cost out of the participants’ fees.”
The donations are handed out twice a year.
“We’ve got a board that discusses and decides who we’re going to support,” Mr McKern said.
“That’s always a really difficult process.
“Its getting harder and harder for community groups to find funding and they’re all appreciative of that support to help drive their community programs.”
Other recipients included Bendigo Health Auxiliary, Bendigo Yacht Club, Sandhurst Hockey Club and Bendigo Senior Secondary College.
About 30 people attended the presentation at the Shamrock Hotel.
