CITY of Greater Bendigo councillor James Williams has confirmed he would be interested in taking on the role of deputy mayor.
It is believed council is considering nominating a deputy mayor who will take on mayor duties when the mayor is unavailable.
"If the position's accepted then I'll be interested," Cr Williams said on Monday.
"But that's a decision for council and that needs to be made.
"So it's still got a long way to go.
"We haven't confirmed anything.
"But I would be interested if such a position was formed."
Council will meet for its monthly meeting on Wednesday and will consider a report recommending paid parking for the Bendigo Hospital precinct.
"We know from the evidence in every city in the world that paid parking helps keep those car parks turning over and keeps them available," director of planning and development Prue Mansfield said.
"That's why we have paid parking in the CBD, it's why other cities have paid parking.
"It's actually about maintaining that turnover so people go, 'I can only stay two hours or three hours and they leave and that means someone else can come'.
"So that's actually what we're trying to do here.
"Yes, hospital staff and contractors might have to walk a bit further than they would like to."
Under the proposal, the council will continue to review parking restrictions.
