THE Support Small Business Day has led to an increase in customers at local stores, according to Bendigo Traders Association president Ross White.
Local businesses took part in the state government event Saturday with sales and promotions.
Mr White, who owns Bags on Williamson, said he had seen a 15 to 20 per cent increase in sales.
“It’s started off positive,” he said Saturday morning.
“With this weather and the support we’ve had from local media, it’s been great.
“Hopefully it will finish off well.
“It’s small step but a good step forward by the government.
“Hopefully they’ll make it an annual event.”
Mr White noted the importance of small businesses.
“They play a major role in the economy,” he said.
“Small businesses support young people with jobs and if we didn’t have them in town it would be a sad and sorry place.
“It’s been hard lately but we can see it’s slightly picking up, which hopefully will be a sign of things to come for Christmas.”
