MAURIE Betts has volunteered with the Bendigo sub-branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association for 25 years, after joining in only its second year of operation.
For Maurie, who lives in White Hills, the most important thing he gains from the time he spends there is friendship.
“I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t enjoy it,” he said.
”The friendship is the best thing about it.
“The friends you make in the army are different from the friends you have outside.”
Maurie has been the Bendigo VVA’s secretary for the past 20 years.
As such he is responsible for such pragmatic things as taking the minutes of meetings.
He also organises things like this weekend’s garage sale, an important fund-raiser for the association along with other activities such as chook raffles.
All proceeds of the garage sale go to the welfare of veterans and widows of vets.
He’s hoping for a big turnout of bargain hunters at the garage sale, to be held behind the RSL hall in Havilah Street, Bendigo.
The sale of a host of items starts at 8am both Saturday and Sunday and will go “until we get too tired,” he said.
