BENDIGO woman Kim Martin hopes the community can dig deep on Sunday to raise money for a worthy cause.
Mrs Martin, owner of the McIvor Hotel, will take part in one of the Leukaemia Foundation’s quirkiest fundraising campaigns to date – the U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year.
U.G.L.Y, which stands for Understanding, Generous Likeable You with the event offering bartenders a fun way to raise funds to assist people who have blood cancer and related blood disorders.
Mrs Martin will host a trivia day and silent auction at The McIvor Hotel on Sunday.
It will be the first time Mrs Martin has participated in the fundraiser and she is encouraging anybody and everybody to attend.
“I’m hoping to see 100 people attend and raise anywhere from $1000,” she said.
Mrs Martin said a blood cancer diagnosis could hit regional families harder than most.
“It can cost families up to $80 a night to stay in Melbourne while their loved one is getting treated,” she said.
“It is about lowering the cost for families.
“It is something they won’t have to worry about.
“I know how hard it is on a family when loved ones have a form of cancer as my husband had cancer back in 2004.”
The trivia day and silent auction will be held on Sunday starting at 12.30pm.
Entry is $5 per person or $25 for a table of six.
Every week the hotel will donate $2 for every parmigiana they sell until the end of the fundraiser on November 25.
McIvor Hotel staff will also be dressed in their U.G.L.Y shirts to show their support for the unique fundraiser.
At the end of the fundraiser the bartender who raises the most money will win a range of prizes including a holiday and a fully installed Hoshizaki ice machine for the hotel.
