THE Strathdale Quilters are responsible for lovingly restoring the 1895 Heritage Signature Quilt to its former glory.
Group member Judy Woodlock shared details of the long process during the Thursday's unveiling of the historic quilt at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
"The Heritage Signature Quilt was owned by Evelyn Leamon who passed away at Strath-Haven Residential Care in Condon Street, Bendigo, in July 2002.
"In 2003 it was donated to the Strathdale Quilters by Cobie Harvie, wife of Evelyn's nephew.
"She knew it was a valuable piece of the city's history so felt that Bendigo was where it belonged."
At the time the quilt was little more than a pile of rags, but the group set about trying to track its history.
In 2007 Strathdale Quilters formed a sub-committee dedicated to the conservation of the quilt; research into the signatories and with an emphasis on finding a permanent home for the artefact.
Ms Woodlock recalled the many hours group members had spend crawling around on their hands and knees inspecting the quilt and recording the various signatures.
Ms Woodlock said she was proud the group had been instrumental in saving a valuable piece of Bendigo's history.
