BENDIGO Hawks Aquatic swimmers battled inclement weather and poor water visibility at the Victorian Open Water Championships held at the Hazelwood Pondage near Morwell last weekend.
Of the eight BHA swimmers, 19-year-old Kahlia Marsh led the way with a gold medal-winning swim in the 10km championship.
Marsh followed this up with a silver medal in the 5 km event on Sunday morning.
While Marsh was the only BHA swimmer to medal in the championship events conducted over 5 km and 10km, Angus Verbeek, Bailey Harriden and Tyson Jelbart performed admirably.
Jelbart warmed up for his 5km swim with a win in the Male 16-to-19 years 1km non-championship event, while Olivia Wright was impressive in picking up the silver in the Female 10-to-12 yrs 2.5 km race.
In other BHA results, Torsten Lau swam strongly to finish 4th in the Male 13-to-15 years 2.5 km event, as did Amelia Beaton in taking 9th in the corresponding female competition. Youngest of the group, Ziggy Lau, did well to finish 10th in the Male 10-12yrs 1 km event.
“I am amazed at the versatility of this group”, said Wain.
“Just six weeks ago they were matching it with the best at the Victorian short course championships, and now they are out here braving the elements and holding their own in open water competition”.
