THE State Government is urging the public to be wary of calls from people claiming to be from Westpac or the Office of Fair Trading, after a Bendigo man lost $30,000 in a scam.
The man contacted Consumer Affairs Victoria after he received several calls from a person who claimed to work for Westpac.
The caller told the man he owed a large sum of money and advised him someone from the Office of Fair Trading would be in contact.
Someone claiming to be from the Office of Fair Trading called and gave the man a Western Union account number.
The man made 14 payments after he received about an average of five calls a day requesting more money.
Consumers Affair minister Heidi Victoria said the scammers had gone to great lengths to make the calls seem credible.
"The best advice is to never send money to someone you do not know and do not trust," she said.
