Companies throw support behind Support Small Business Day
AWARD-WINNING Bendigo eatery Sim’R has highlighted the importance of buying local in the lead up to Saturday's Support Small Business Day.
Sim’R owners Randall and Simone Blakemore said buying locally was “a win-win for everyone”.
The Hargeaves Street eatery buys all its produce from companies in the region.
“They can sell their produce to us and everyone can make a good living,” Mr Blakemore said.
“It means we’ve got beautiful fresh produce.
“I’m pretty sure it generates more business.
“Our suppliers come in and support us with all their friends, so it has a snowball effect.”
The company buys from businesses including Golden Yoke Free Range Eggs, The Good Loaf and local wineries.
“We go out of our way to find local produce,” he said.
“Most of the suppliers are all our friends.
“We’ve supported them over the last 20 years, so it’s not just a one-off sort of thing.”
Sim'R was judged best new business at the Bendigo Business Excellence Awards on Friday.
Mr Blakemore said companies needed a product that was in demand.
But he said they also needed to compete on price.
If people don’t support local businesses they close down
“If you’ve got a good product, people should be able to buy it,” he said.
“It’s got to be around the same price.
“That’s especially true with retail at the moment.
“Surely some people need to sharpen their pencils and be competitive.”
Ms Blakemore said Bendigo businesses need public support if they were to stay open.
“If people don’t support local businesses they close down,” she said.
“We support all local businesses as much as we can with local suppliers.
“And obviously all of staff are local.”
Companies have been registering for the Support Small Business Day, which will be held on October 19.
Bendigo Traders Association president Ross White had described the event as a positive step.
“It’s a fantastic idea,” he said.
“We should encourage more things like this.
“It’s a great initiative from the government and there should be more of it.”
City of Greater Bendigo city futures director Stan Liacos said Bendigo’s economy was strong.
"I think it's important that we buy local," he said.
