CITY of Greater Bendigo city futures director Stan Liacos says the upcoming Support Small Business Day is a good opportunity to reflect on the importance of local businesses.
"Small businesses form an important part of the Greater Bendigo economy," he said.
"And I think it's important that we buy local or source local services as often as we can.
"Having said that, it is also very important for local businesses to ensure that their shops or their services are up to a high standard to ensure they are as competitive as possible."
Mr Liacos said the Greater Bendigo economy was in "very strong shape".
"We have have the lowest unemployment rate of any other regional city in Victoria and that's something of which we should be proud," he said.
"But we need to work hard to ensure that it remains that way."
A host of Bendigo businesses have registered for Support Small Business Day on October 19.
The Victorian Government initiative boasts the slogan ‘Shop Big in Small Business’ and offers retailers, cafes, restaurants and service providers to celebrate with one-day events and special promotions on October 19.
Last week Bendigo Traders Association president Ross White and Bendigo Business Council executive officer Patrick Falconer threw their support behind the event.
“It’s a fantastic idea,” Mr White said.
“We should encourage more things like this.
“It’s a great initiative from the government and there should be more of it.”
