CFA operations manager Mark Gilmore is urging central Victorian residents to start preparing for the fire season.
About 100 key leaders in central Victorian fire and land operations attended a briefing in Bendigo yesterday.
Mr Gilmore said it was important for residents to reduce the amount of fuel around their house and discuss bushfire safety plans in October and November.
“We need people to do their part of the job," he said.
“We ask people to cut their grass, clean their gutters and remove things from around the house.
“We want all houses to have a bushfire safety plan.
"It’s useful for the whole family to do together so everyone knows what to do before and on the day of fires.”
Department of Education and Primary Industries Loddon Mallee regional controller Rob Price said the DEPI had begun planned burnings and road works in the lead up to summer.
